Title: Deuteron-induced reactions at low and medium energies: Consistent direct and statistical model analyses

Summary: The deuteron-induced reactions at low and medium energies have a great importance within several on-going strategic research programmes at international large-scale facilities as ITER, SPIRAL-2, and IFMIF. The accurate knowledge of the deuteron activation cross sections is critical for selecting and validating their best structural materials and a number of key technologies, while the actual data of deuteron-induced reaction are less extensive and mature than for neutrons. A main reason for this status is the weak binding energy of the deuteron that is responsible for a supplementary variety of reactions initiated by the neutrons and protons coming from deuteron breakup. This project proposal concerns a deeper understanding of deuteron breakup, stripping and pick-up reactions, all together and consistently with the better-known and described statistical emission. Overall, the theoretical description of the deuteron interactions with nuclei needs significant improvements that could be validated only by suitable description of experimental data. At the same time, following the project eventual achievements as well as in order to additionally check them, setting up of well-documented proposals for further measurements is planned. There are concerned in this respect experiments at SPIRAL2 and the IFIN-HH Tandem VdG accelerator. Ultimately, this project may do possible, by involvement of young people, a transfer of knowledge from older to the new generation of Romanian scientists.
